Scallop is the common name for any saltwater clam that has two hinged (bivalve) shells. They have a sweet, rich taste that can be mild to briny and have a creamy white or ivory translucent appearance. Scallops are a good low-fat source of protein, vitamins, and minerals.

Unlike other bivalves, scallops have a ring of 50 to 100 eyes around the edge of their mantle.
